Know your power
Last night I attended the Council of Urban Professionals' Distinguished Leaders Series event featuring Edward Lewis, the founder of Essence Magazine. Listening to his journey that ultimately led him to found the legendary publication that celebrates and honors women of color, was inspiring and made me reflect on the concept of power. When asked from an audience member what, if anything, black women should be doing now that we perhaps aren't, his reply: vote. That voting is our voice and it matters not who you vote for, but that you exercise your right to do so. And on today, election day, no wiser words were spoken.
We all posses our own unique power but the challenge is to identify what yours is and harness its energy. Be it being a school teacher, a CFO, a writer, an actor, a nutritionist, a scientist, etc, each of us has something special to offer this world that can make a difference in someone's life. We are all in the same boat trying to be our best selves, and staying true to yourself and your journey while honoring those who came before you by voting, makes us all unstoppable.
