A refined inspriation

Tonight I had the privilege of meeting Philippe Von Borries, co-founder of the fashionably sleek lifestyle website refinery29, at a WIE Network event where he participated in a candid conversation conducted by WIE founder Dee Poku-Spalding.  The talk touched on everything from leadership, women in the workplace, its operations, deciding on the direction of the site, and all points in between. Listening to him talk, it was easy to understand how refinery29 has grown into such a revered site, as his passion and work ethic were evident. As with building a better body or building a business, there is no shortage of hard work and certainly no shortcuts on the path to success – and an unflappable amount of self-confidence and resilience doesn't hurt either.

Listening to him speak was a reminder of the power of believing in yourself and following your dreams. It was inspiring as it reiterated that anything is possible with hard work, dedication, faith and a bit of luck.

Thanks for the reminder, Philippe. You're living proof.

Monday night fashion

Kate Spade is quintessentially New York and tonight the brand held an event at their Upper East Side location in conjunction with the lush experiential travel magazine, Afar. Afar is as much an aspirational publication as it is attainable, much like Kate Spade, so it was a great collaboration.

Was a fun night filled with beautiful glossy things and there was even a roulette table where Kate Spade products were at stake. I'm happy to say that I won both a pair of earrings and a travel book. (I really should hop the first plane to Vegas with that luck!)

Inspiration by the billions

It can't be stated enough how vital it is to surround yourself with positive, inspiring people as an entrepreneur. There are so many challenges to being an entrepreneur that it is helpful to be around other like-minded types.

At The Next Billion forum yesterday in New York, panelists from companies such as Microsoft, PayPal, Gyft and Gotenna, spoke about the connected online world we live in today and its rapidly growing future and implications. In addition, the other attendees were just as informative and inspiring to engage with.

As you work on brand, be it personal or otherwise, its important to go out of your way to network and expand your base beyond your focused area of expertise. All types of entrepreneurs are good to communicate with as there will be common threads about your respective journeys. And it's always good to feel connected and a contributor to the next billion, as I did yesterday.

Know your power

Last night I attended the Council of Urban Professionals' Distinguished Leaders Series event featuring Edward Lewis, the founder of Essence Magazine. Listening to his journey that ultimately led him to found the legendary publication that celebrates and honors women of color, was inspiring and made me reflect on the concept of power. When asked from an audience member what, if anything, black women should be doing now that we perhaps aren't, his reply: vote. That voting is our voice and it matters not who you vote for, but that you exercise your right to do so. And on today, election day, no wiser words were spoken.

We all posses our own unique power but the challenge is to identify what yours is and harness its energy. Be it being a school teacher, a CFO, a writer, an actor, a nutritionist, a scientist, etc, each of us has something special to offer this world that can make a difference in someone's life. We are all in the same boat trying to be our best selves, and staying true to yourself and your journey while honoring those who came before you by voting, makes us all unstoppable.
